The Toy Storey Residence, designed by Wallmakers in Vadakara, North Kerala, exemplifies sustainable architecture through innovative material reuse and bioclimatic design. The house’s facade integrates over 6,200 discarded toys into a CSEB (Compressed Stabilized Earth Block) ‘Toy Jaali’ lattice, transforming plastic waste into a sculptural and insulating element. This, along with the central courtyard, promotes natural ventilation and reduces reliance on mechanical cooling. Furthermore, the project utilizes low-energy CSEB walls and a radial ferrocement shell roof, minimizing embodied energy and construction materials. This thoughtful approach demonstrates how architecture can address environmental concerns while fostering a unique aesthetic. Designed by Frank Gehry (see more), the Colburn Center at the Colburn School (see more) will be a ‘hall for all,’ giving artists and students a place to shine.

Visitors were greeted by a dark room illuminated by 21 open box rooms, each surrounded by semi-transparent walls. Stepping into these boxes, guests experienced a sensory journey, listening to sound frequencies composed by arts and research lab Chromasonic, watching neon lights change in sync with the beat, and feeling vibrations run through their skin. Transitioning to brightly lit spaces, guests explored how colors are perceived through touch, sight, smell, and taste.

An annual series of ‘designboom marts‘ brings together young designers from around the world to exhibit at some of the world’s top design fairs. Salone del Mobile.Milano presented an installation by American filmmaker David Lynch, in the form of two meditation rooms. Curated by Antonio Monda, the installation featured a series of empty rooms with a central armchair equipped for writing and painting, adorned with unsettling images chosen by Lynch. The project, in collaboration with Piccolo Teatro di Milano, invites solitary contemplation before engaging with the bustling atmosphere of the fair, preparing visitors for a more profound and reflective experience. In the courtyard of Palazzo Litta, the Japanese design studio we+ showcased their vibrant outdoor installation called Straordinaria.

Arkana Architects’ Oberoi Villa in Indonesia redefines sustainable living through its innovative approach to airflow and spatial connection. The open floor plan across all levels, alongside double-height ceilings, fosters a naturally light and airy atmosphere. Furthermore, the lack of partitions between the ground floor, featuring an open kitchen and bedroom, and the mezzanine master suite, allows for natural ventilation to flow freely throughout the villa. This synergy between design and Indonesia’s tropical climate creates a comfortable and eco-friendly living environment. The Colburn School in Los Angeles, one of the world’s leading schools for music and dance, held a groundbreaking ceremony for its 100,000-square-foot expansion designed by Frank Gehry. The new Colburn Center will dramatically increase the school’s elite training and performance facilities and provide much-needed performance space, including a 1,000-seat, state-of-the-art concert hall, for young artists across LA. The groundbreaking ceremony took place adjacent to the construction site at 130 Olive Street, located within Downtown Los Angeles’s Bunker Hill area diagonally across the street from Colburn’s existing campus on Grand Avenue. The expansion will stand as an important addition to the cultural corridor which includes Gehry Partners’ Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Music Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Diller Scofidio + Renfro-designed broad.

Love Hultén’s role is to echo these sounds into synth tunes, sharing them with the visitors of the festival too. Inside the Project Area of Sónar+D, designboom welcomes visitors to the exhibition of some of Love Hultén’s sound-generating art, including a new machine tailored and made specially for the festival.

With this new residential project, the LA-based design team pays homage to its early modernist neighbor to create a dialogue between past and present. At Palazzo Citterio, LOEWE showcased a collection of lamps created by 24 artists and longstanding collaborators.
